What is Type P Cable?
Type P cable include type p marine cable, oil and gas power cable, type p power cable, type p shielded instrumentation cable, is a cable type addressed in IEEE 1580 Recommended Practice for Marine Cable for Use on Shipboard and Fixed or Floating Facilities. This Type P cable has been used for more than 40 years in harsh environments for offshore drilling operations where oil and mud are common.
As we all know, the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry is of vital importance around the globe. However, the oil, natural gas, and petrochemical industries face a series of challenges in obtaining and processing the installation environment and equipment required for their final products, including chemicals, oils, acids, and hydrocarbon containing slurries, as well as UV, salt water immersion, and mechanical and thermal stress. Especially all cables used in drilling applications must be able to withstand permanent vibration and mechanical stress, but some sites require greater resistance to oil, mud, or salt corrosion. This is where the type P cable is useful as a durable oil drilling rig cable that can handle challenges.
The IEEE 1580 Type P Cable specification covers all single and multi-conductor Type P cables intended for use on marine vessels, as well as fixed and floating offshore facilities. Cables under this standard are rated 300 V to 35 kV. Many of these cables also meet other industry standards, such as CSA, UL, and IEC.
Type P Cable is typically constructed with Irradiated Cross-Linked Polyolefin insulation and is also often jacketed with CPE, increasing its resistance to sun, flame, chemicals, and oil. High strand counts can make the cable more flexible and resistant to vibration. Type P cable is available in armored and unarmored versions.
