What is BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 Cable

BS5308 and PAS 5308 screened instrumentation cables with SWA steel wire armour, classified as Part 1 Type 2. They are commonly used in the oil and petrochemical industry and for other interconnection applications requiring control and monitoring. Despite BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 cable having been withdrawn over 10 years ago to be replaced by the harmonised European standard EN 50288-7, the BS5308 and the PAS 5308 cables are still commonly specified around the world.



As with Part 1 Type 1 cables, the Part 1 Type 2 have PE, XLPE, Silicone or PVC insulation and either LSZH or Silicone sheathing. The Aluminium Polyester tape (Al/PET) can be applied collectively or individually and collectively (CAM or ICAM) depending on the degree of shielding required. BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 cable offer additional mechanical protection in the form of steel wire armouring - it should be noted that this has an impact on the minimum bending radius of the cable as flexibility is somewhat impaired. These cables remain comparatively lightweight and small in overall diameter.

BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 Cable Application:

BS5308 Part 1 Type 2 Cables are designed to carry communication and control signals in a variety of installation types including those found in the petrochemical industry. The signals can be of analogue, data or voice types and from a variety of transducers such as pressure, proximity or microphone. Part 1 Type 2 cables are designed where a greater degree of mechanical protection is required or where there is direct burial at a suitable depth. Suitable for fire resistant installations. Individually screened for enhanced signal security.
